Matt Watts: Songs from a Window

mattresized3

Matt Watts (°1987) is an American folk singer born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to a spiritual family with Cherokee roots in the Carolinas where he spent his childhood, already destined to be uprooted by his father’s calling to the ministry. He has lived in over seven different States, including a year in Paris, France. It was at the age of fifteen in the mountains of Montana along the Missouri river that he began recording his songs, organizing local concerts and touring the North West.

Since arriving in Antwerp, Belgium at the age of nineteen he has become a folk singer in his own write. In 2011 he independently released "Joy And Longing" (CD/Digital), an album written during a stay in Cambridge, England and recorded over various visits back to Belgium. In 2013 "Wayward Wind" (Vinyl/Digital) was released through Bobonne Records. The album was recorded live using only first takes in a mobile studio by Guido Op de Beeck (Bobonne Records) at the Belgian coast in collaboration with country group The Calicos.

He has also worked with many artists, poets and writers. Most notably Jan Verstraeten (Charlie Jones), Max Temmerman (Winner of the Herman De Coninck Publieksprijs 2013), Staf Verbeeck (Deus, Calexico), Fritz Sundermann (Axelle Red, Bobbejaan), the American Science Fiction writer S. Morgan Balkcom and shared a bill with many performers and groups in the US and Europe. Most recently Simon Joyner & The Ghosts, Marc Ford (The Black Crowes) and Belgian groups Eriksson Delcroix (Zita Swoon, Lais), Dans Dans (The Flying Horseman, Strand), Roland Van Campenhout, Charlie Jones’ Big Band, Stanton (Jim White, Brazzaville) and Winther among many others.

His newest album "Songs >From A Window" sees a return to folk music. Beginning with the Ballad “Leonard Peltier” about a Native American man believed to have been wrongfully convicted of murder. Songs written to a land transfigured and a people who have been scattered. As captivated in the song "You Will Know Him", ‘For you will know him as you know me. Not one stone upon another will I keep.’ "Songs >From A Window" is an album recorded in the early folk tradition. Relying solely on timbre and song. For sure his best album so far, strong stories and breathtaking songs.
